Requirements

What you need to have yourself

Five points. If you're missing one, you can't get a taxi driver licence.

At least 20 years old

The minimum age for a taxi driver licence is 20 years.

Driving licence class B for at least two years

You must have held the licence continuously for two years. If you've had a break, the time before the break doesn't count.

Police certificate

The police assess your conduct when you apply for a taxi driver licence. You don't need to get the certificate yourself before you apply.

Health certificate under the class D requirements

Your GP or another doctor fills out the certificate. Sight, hearing and certain diagnoses are assessed.

Enough Norwegian to talk with a passenger

You should be able to take a message, explain where you're driving and answer a question along the way. Perfect Norwegian isn't required.

Taxi driver licence

The taxi driver licence is the police's permission to carry passengers for payment. You apply digitally, submit a health certificate and wait for an answer. The police assess your conduct and health.

Taxi driver exam

The exam is a theory test held by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. It covers rules, driving and rest time, customer service and practical parts of the job. You book a time and take the test at a traffic station.

Are you a foreign citizen

The police look at how long you've lived in Norway when they assess conduct. If you've lived here a short time, they may ask for a police certificate from your home country.

A driving licence from an EEA country can be used as it is. A licence from outside the EEA must be exchanged for a Norwegian one before you can apply for a taxi driver licence.

Rules can change. Always check politiet.no and vegvesen.no for what applies now.
